History of Vwira
In early 2006, the middle management of a faith-based AIDS outreach organisation in Luwinga became frustrated
with the corruption of the upper management. So they left and created Vwira. In addition to helping
people infected by and affected by HIV/AIDS and TB, their primary objective is transparency and
accountability. People showing signs of participating in the organisation for the purposes of
improving their economic circumstances are asked to leave. The group started with a core of about
ten volunteers.
Vwira arranged a meeting in each of Luwinga's 22 villages. At each of
these meetings, they
got permission from the village headman to work in the village.
They explained their goals and activities to the people of the village and got volunteers.
Vwira now has a sub-committee in each village that coordinates outreach in their village.
Vwira now has approximately 300 volunteers working in Luwinga.
Vwira raises funds through egg farming and a vegetable garden. They received a grant
from the National AIDS Commission in Malawi and have received financial support
from Ungweru , Mzuzu Central Hospital
and from private donors.
